What is causing your headaches?

According to the NHS, 10 million people in the UK suffer from regular headaches.

That’s a huge amount of people walking around with ongoing daily pain. They’re also one of the most common reasons people visit a doctor and miss time from work. Headaches also contribute to a lack of focus and drive, which can lead to a decline in your mental as well as your physical wellbeing.

Did you know that 70% of headaches come from muscle tension? Tightness in head and neck muscles lead to that ‘head in a vice’ feeling. Whilst lack of water and stress can be a huge trigger, our day to day modern lifestyles: that’s things like our phones; computers; sitting down; and driving mean our muscles are under a lot of pressure. All of the this causes them to tense, pinching nerves and creating pain in the head.

This repetitive pressure causes the majority of people to reach for pills. Over time, this numbs the pain and often, we can stop recognising headaches for the serious sign they are, that something isn’t right and needs attention.

Don’t just ‘switch off’ the pain…

If you’re one of the 10 million and you find yourself reaching for the painkillers to cope with headaches, it’s time to look at what's really going on. Pain is our body’s way of telling us
that something is wrong. When we repeatedly mask that we could be causing the problem
to actually worsen, as well as encouraging multiple negative effects on our bodies in the
long term.

As well as concealing more serious conditions which need diagnosis and treatment, here are just some of the problems that long term use of opiate pain relievers can cause:

- Nausea and vomiting
- Constipation
- Immune system weakness
- Depression
- Hormone imbalance
- Diarrhoea

Dr Ben Bullard, our Chiropractor has a useful analogy: “If your car had a warning light pop up on the dash and you went to the mechanic, you would not want them to simply turn the light off for you. You would ask them to find out the cause and get it fixed. Why should it be different with our bodies? Headaches are a sign of dysfunction. As a Chiropractor, I am able to assess the body and get to the route of the problem, working to fix it and begin ‘switching off’ the pain” the right way.

What do you do if headaches are causing restrictions in your everyday life? Maybe you're unable to play the sports you love or fun days out are cut short by the onset of a headache.

Get back in life’s driving seat with chiropractic care, which will keep the pain away more effectively than any quick fix.

When you make an appointment at Fysikal Chiropractic, we take time to learn about you as an individual, what your day to day life consists of, what impact your activities have and what issues you face, before deciding how best to treat you.

Research shows that the most common types of headaches respond well to chiropractic treatment – and this is something Dr Ben has certainly found to be true through his clinical experience.

Chiropractic removes the obstructions that affect how the nervous system works. Dr. Ben will examine the vertebrae in your neck and back, and adjust the joints that are restricted to relieve your headache, allowing you to get on with normal life, pain-free.

We will also recommend small, simple changes that will continue to help improve your health, such as your posture, sleeping position and desk position. You may even notice that, without ongoing pain, you begin to cope with stressful situations more effectively, meaning you are less likely to get more neck tension and restrictions.

Whether you have the occasional headache or a chronic problem, neck tension doesn't have to trap you in a cycle of pain and pills. At Fysikal, we get to the route of the problem and work with you to create a plan that gets you back on track.
